Handling Diamonds

How to handle and wear diamonds and diamond jewelry with care

  • Have your diamond ring checked by a reliable jeweler every 12 to 18 months. The jeweler will check to see if the prongs of the diamond setting are secure. When the diamond moves around in the setting or if you can hear the diamond moving around, the prongs or the bezel need tightening. Failure to do so may damage the diamond or the diamond may fall out of the setting.

  • Remove your diamond ring or diamond jewelry prior to taking a bath, shower or putting on makeup. Soap and makeup residue dulls the shine and sparkle of the diamond making it look lackluster and require more frequent cleaning.

  • Remove your diamond ring before doing housework. Chemicals from cleaners and abrasives can damage diamonds and its diamond setting. Products containing chlorine can dull the appearance of diamonds and discolor the metal used in diamond settings. Polishing the diamond may restore its shine.
