Cleaning Diamond Rings and Diamond Jewelry

How to clean your diamonds

  • Diamonds that sparkle brightly can easily look dull and without brilliance from everyday items such as soap residue, lotion, makeup, powder and body or skin oils. Keeping your diamond ring clean is essential for optimum sparkle and brilliance.

  • The easiest method for cleaning diamond rings is using warm soapy water. Fill a small bowl with warm water and mild liquid detergent. Avoid Dawn and other detergents with grease cleaners since these chemicals can damage some gemstones. Soak the diamond ring in the solution for a few minutes then gently brush the diamond ring while still submerged underwater. Rinse under running water making sure the drain is closed before introducing the diamond ring to the sink. Pat dry with a paper towel or a lint free cloth.

  • Ultrasonic cleaners are also widely used in diamond jewelry cleaning. If your diamond ring has other gemstones, then an ultrasonic cleaner is not recommended because the surface of these other stones can be etched, reducing the luster of the stone (such as emeralds).

  • Ionic jewelry cleaners are generally safer for all types of gems and stones unlike the ultrasonic cleaner.
